Volunteers defied the rain at the weekend and got to work planting thousands of bulbs to generate a display of colour in the village ahead of this year's North West In Bloom.

The In Bloom team planted bulbs in the park, concentrating on the banking and the pathway and steps leading from London Road into the park, Lydiat Lane on the verges outside Holmfield, in the planters on London Road, the railway station, the Hockey Club, the Festival Hall, several roundabouts and local churches.

Somel local restaurants and schools are also taking part with The Ryleys and Alderley Edge School for Girls planting tubs to put in the village and Alderley Edge Community Primary School are planting in their garden.

Councillor Christine Munro said "We had an amazing day, and I think we can see the end of the road!

"It is still a little way off but we did have 20,000 bulbs to plant so I think we have done really well."

The In Bloom team will be meeting again at 10am on Saturday, 21st January at 10am at the junction of Ryleys Lane and Chorley Hall Lane.

Christine said "There is a lot to do there and pupils from Ryleys School have offered to help us with this next week as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award programme."

Following this they are meeting on Sunday 22nd January, again at 10am, at the station car park.

Christine added "We are thinking we will start planting on the A34 on the opposite side of the road to Horseshoe Farm which will give people an attractive drive into the village with bulbs on either side of the road."

If you are free and can spare a couple of hours to join them you will be most welcome.

I understand that Woodford Park Nocutts.
Garden Centre based at Chester Road, Woodford were very generous with the donation of bulbs to the Alderley Edge Partnership.
The daffodils and tulips should make a super splash of colour.
We had a group of volunteers from the Hockey Club plant along the verge adjacent to the playing field entrance and involved children in creating a display near the hockey pitch.
If anyone wants to help the village build on its very creditable 2016 Silver Gilt award in the North West In Bloom competition then Christine Munro will be delighted to hear from you.

We've done it!!!
20,000 bulbs all planted.
A very big thank you to everyone who took part. Its been hard work in the rain and cold but hopefully in the late spring we will reap the rewards and see a fantastic display all around the park, roadside verges, roundabouts and in the village.
Special thanks to Notcutts Woodford Park Garden Centre for donating the bulbs to us and for all their support, advice and help.
