The countdown to Christmas will officially start in the village on Thursday, 24th November, when the Alderley Edge Christmas lights are switched on.

We are currently awaiting confirmation regarding which celebrity will switch the lights on but they will be assisted by the three winners of the school's poster competition: Rhianna Donatien from Year 5 at Alderley Edge School for Girls, Nehmah Tayara from Year 5 at Alderley Edge Community Primary School and Ollie Hudson from Year 2 at The Ryleys.

This year marks the 14th anniversary of this popular community event which is organised by Alderley Edge traders, as a thank you to those who have supported them during the year.

Once again, London Road will be closed to traffic from 5pm to enable the festivities to spread down the centre of the village.

A stage will be located on London Road, outside Nat West Bank, where the crowds will be entertained with live performances from a variety of acts starting at 6pm and Father Christmas will be making an appearance on his sleigh.

Mitch Gilbert, Chairman of AeTag said "We are looking forward to our annual Christmas Light Switch on event, now in its 14th Year and held in the heart of the village - London Road.

"We hope the event is well supported as previous years with festive fun, Father Christmas making his popular appearance - he will be located at The Bubble Room this year. Mulled wine, a hog roast and pizza will be available and festive cheer to help bring a Christmas atmosphere to both residents and businesses here in Alderley Edge."

The Alderley Edge Christmas lights will be switched on at approximately 7.30pm and the event is scheduled to finish at 9pm.

Just a suggestion but Ben from the Methodist to switch lights on? Why do we need to get a celebrity?

Completely agree! Alderley Edge is losing its identity with the obsession it has with 'celebrities'......whatever that word means! Which 'star' gazers makes this decision?

I agree - Ben would be great and at least recognised by all age groups.

So, many people stopping me and moaning about the lack of tree st the precinct. The tree at the triangle looks lovely but you can't see it due to the 3 large trees - yes, they've grown.
So Duncan Herald asked the manager at Waitrose what they knew. Apparently Waitrose asked if it could be moved further away from the entrance - baised on H&S.
They said that they would pay for the repaving and the electricity would be easy to do. They eftvit with the PC.
The precinct is the heart of the community, it creates an atmosphere that brings the village together at Christmas and yes, it helps trade.
Why on earth have we not got a Christmas Tree? We are one of wealthiest areas in the country, we had a precept minctesde but have seen nothing for it.
Who to blame for no tree - not Waitrose.
