Cuts made to save Christmas lights switch on

aexmaslights

Last month we reported that the Alderley Edge Christmas Light Switch On was at risk of not happening this year due to concerns over the funding.

The event has been organised by Mitch Gilbert of Rainbow Balloons and Alderley Edge Traders Action Group (AeTAG) since November 2001 and has mainly been funded through their £104 annual membership fee along with occasional donations.

This money is used to pay for staging, public insurance, first aid, signage for the road closure, entertainment and donations to various local organisations who are involved in the event - such as the Alderley Edge Scout Band, St Philips & St James Church and the Round Table Santa.

We can now confirm that the Christmas Light Switch On event will go ahead this year and the festive season will kick off in the village on Thursday, 24th November.

Once again a road closure will be in place so the celebrations can take place down London Road from 6pm to 9pm.

Mitch Gilbert, who organises the event, explained "The reason we are able to go ahead is we have managed to reduce some of the costs involved with the event, and also introduced five stalls from local restaurants."

He added "There will be no other stalls or market present this year, however, there will be the usual entertainment as in previous years to make the evening festive and other vendors who sell on the evening also help contribute towards the night.

"We do still only have 10 businesses that contribute to AeTAG that has not increased to date and hopefully if other businesses see the effort and wonderful evening that is organised with lots of hard work, they may consider contributing to this annual event and help keep it going for years to come.

"We look forward to seeing local residents of Alderley Edge and surrounding areas for our annual light switch on event, now in its 14th Year, on Thursday 24th November."

Quote for thought: 'To date the cost to Alderley Edge Parish Council for the refurbished Festival Hall has been £600,000'. Priorities of funding or even sensible management of it.

I am not at all surprised that only 10 businesses are contributing , I walked through the village on the morning of the Tour of Britain and was truly shocked by the lack of effort ,
I was told that someone ( possibly from the Council ) had gone round the shops just that morning selling orange paper flowers to the shops that hadn't bothered doing anything towards the occasion . After all the great effort of Christine Munro , painting the bikes orange , etc. etc. and ( see below )

Christine Munro told alderleyedge.com "It is a great opportunity for the traders and particularly the restaurants to benefit from the additional footfall on the day, and it also a great opportunity to make our village look fantastic for this once in a lifetime event coming to our village.

Runway did a great window and Rainbow balloons were all over the village lighting it up with orange and making it look so special , thank goodness for businesses like them.

Well done Mitch and the AETAG, smart to engage with the local restaurants!
The rumour on London Road is legendary mascot, 'Eddie Edgehog' from Alderley Edge Hockey Club will be along on the night to 'wave' in the lights. £100 donation on its way from the club to help the cost burden.

My business has now been resident on London Road for 2 1/2 years and this is the first I have heard of AETAG! So no suprise only 10 businesses have contributed.

Jason, as someone who was quoted as saying "We couldn't be happier to have relocated to Alderley Edge and to get fully involved within the local community." in an article about your business's relocation to Alderley Edge, I trust that now you are aware of AETAG, you'll be making a contribution? I'm sure the local community will greatly appreciate your involvement. http://bit.ly/2enR84l

Hi Stuart,
does your entry above propose that the Parish Council should throw some money at the 'Xmas Lights Switch On' ? If so, you got my vote !

If you examine the P.C's annual budget, it may be possible to locate a source of unspent monies that could indeed be used to support this village event ?

The 15/16 budget includes a proposed £16,000 for allotments and a £4,000 for allotment legal fees. The 16/17 budget proposes £8,000 for allotments and £4,000 for allotment legal fees.
Its quite possible that these sums did not have to be spent and so surely the P.C. could 'take' from there to give a financial helping hand to the xmas event.

Perhaps the good Councillors are even now debating that possibility ?

Just asking !

I would rather see"unspent monies" spent on things that benefit all and last longer than swiching some lights on

Just like to mention that Jason and the Amber Vehicle Solutions team have been very welcome supporters at Alderley Edge Hockey Club since their relocation to the village. Within weeks of arrival They purchased a pitchside advertising board at The Edge Hockey Centre and the club are delighted with continued involvement and keen interest in our community centred club. It's really pleasing to have a good number of village based businesses lend their support to us whilst promoting their business to our members and visitors.

Such a shame there will not be any market stalls selling their goods I thought last year was brilliant with all the stalls and gave people something to look at while waiting for the switch on ! I'm very suprised about this and think it will effect it greatly

Agree such a shame. My girls love it every year going to the market to buy some Christmas stuff, have a hog roast or other market food and some mulled wine. One of the highlights of Christmas in the village.

The main part of that enjoyment isn't the switch on at all. We rarely stay for that, more the Christmas market feel and busy streets.

Hopefully it will return next year when people miss it this year.

Hello Lucy and Tam, thank you for your kind comments about the Christmas Market. It was extremely difficult to set the market up last year as all the volunteers who had offered to help me didn't turn up. Because of this and the fact that the market traders selling time is only around 2 hours, which means they don't sell enough to cover their costs, I felt I couldn't go ahead with it this year. However we are having a Christmas Market in Alderley Edge. This will be on Sunday 11th December from 10am to 4pm and will be held in the railway station car park. This is being organised by The Alderley Edge Partnership and the monies raised from the stall fees will be donated to the villages entry to Britain in Bloom next year. If you would like to find our more about The Alderley Edge Partnership or the Christmas Market please get in touch.

Hi Residents of OUR great Village of Alderley Edge! I was at a party this weekend and heard from a source that this maybe the last " Village Switch On" WHY? because ONLY 9 business's have bothered to make a contribution towards the "BEST VILLAGE EVENT WE HAVE" How disgraceful! So today I walked through the Village and countered the retail type business's, there are about "70" plus commercial business's of about 30, plus TWO Private Schools? These two schools could hold a fund raising day to help? & these 100 business's should look at what the Village & the residents mean to them? Lets have a list of who has made a £ contribution? Lets have some more details of what it costs to put on this great event! What have OUR two supermarkets done to HELP this event!! Does East Cheshire help? Who are the contacts for this event?

Thanks Christine I know we will head down with all our friends to the Christmas market.

Roughly how much does it cost to put on the big light switch on of previous years? If it helps in future years I'm happy to help set it up - as long as I'm free to enjoy it with the kids during the great event!

Hi Tam, I am not sure of the total cost of the Light switch on as I have not been involved in the finances. I organised the Christmas Market and the stall fees, which totalled just over £2,000, I put into the pot. The road closure cost around £600 and this was paid by the Parish Council.
Thank you for your offer of help for future events. If you e-mail me I can send details for your diary.

What costs do the stall holders have apart from travelling to the event ? If you charge them would it not be better for it to be a small amount and have them there to attract people than not have any? Like the other gentleman said not everyone stays for the actual switch on , I don't , I come up and enjoy looking around the market catching up with locals and having some food , people don't want to be waiting around for two hours in the cold with nothing to look around , it's best their there than not and best to get a small amount of money than nothing at all !

£2k doesn't sound much to raise to save it for future years.
