More incidents of cold callers attempting to sell generators

Cheshire Police received three further reports of someone attempting to sell generators and pressure washers on Friday, 7th October.

One incident was in Macclesfield whilst two were in Alderley Edge, firstly at the Chorley Hall Lane allotments and then at Elm Crescent.

These latest incidents follow five reports of cold callers turning up at addresses in Macclesfield, Alderley Edge and Knutsford in July, attempting to sell generators. It is thought that one of these men could be involved in these latest incidents.

One allotment holder told alderleyedge.com "I was confronted by a person with Irish descent, whilst I was on my plot. He was quite assertive in trying to convince me I required a generator that he had spare and for sale. He had already given me a cover story for him being on the allotments.

"Once I declined the offer of the generator he was equally assertive in selling me a jet washer. He became somewhat aggressive when he assumed that I was taking a picture of his van."

Later that day he approached Mr Norbury, who had also been stopped by two men in the summer who showed him boxed generators, power washers and chainsaws. Earlier that day his elderly father-in-law, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease, was escorted by the men - who pretended to know him - to the cash point and persuaded to hand them over £450 for a petrol generator they said he had ordered.

The police are currently looking into these incidents.

A police spokesperson said "If you do have elderly neighbours it is advisable to keep an eye out for them as a matter of course, and report any suspicious behaviour to police on 101."

I had exactly this experience walking in the village on Friday - accosted by a chap with an irish accent who said he was from Tipperary, who promptly treated me like a long lost friend and opened the back of his van to show me a generator that he was trying to sell. Talk about dodgy...
