Clown pranks spread to Cheshire

A current phenomenon of people dressing up as clowns and scaring people, which has come over to the UK from America, seems has reached Cheshire.

A series of clown pranks happened in the Newcastle area on Tuesday, 4th October, which resulted in police issuing a teenage boy with a warning after reports of someone dressed as a clown attempting to scare passer-bys. The 13-year-old was arrested and taken into custody by officers who also seized a knife he had been carrying as part of the fancy dress costume.

Since then Cheshire Police have received a very small number of reports of incidents.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said "We are aware of the current trend in America of people dressing up as clowns, which has reached the UK and received some publicity in the media.

"We have a received a very small number of reports relating to this phenomenon, here in Cheshire, and we're also aware of rumours that are circulating on social media.

"While we appreciate Halloween is just a short time away, scaring people – especially children and vulnerable people – in this way is completely unacceptable and could constitute an offence."

Anyone who sees any suspicious activity, or who have been intimated or upset but his behaviour, should call Cheshire police immediately on 101.
