Police kick off operation to cut alcohol-related disorder during Euros

With the Euros set to kick off this week Cheshire Police has launched a force-wide operation to reduce alcohol-related disorder involving supporters.

Superintendent Luke McDonnell, who is leading the operation, said: "The year's Euros will be particularly exciting as it is the first time that England, Northern Ireland, Ireland and Wales have all qualified. This tournament is a time to join together and celebrate with their friends and family.

"While the majority of people will enjoy the four-week tournament sensibly, unfortunately, there is always a minority who will take advantage of the occasion and use it as an excuse to cause trouble.

"That is why we want to send out a clear message that any kind of disorder, violence or anti-social behaviour, whether it is alcohol-related or not, will not be tolerated."

As part of the operation the Force will be increasing the number of officers on patrols on key dates throughout the tournament. Their work will involve proactively targeting those involved in alcohol related crimes and anti-social behaviour, and taking positive action against them.

Officers will also be conducting spot checks at licenced premises and targeting incidents such as drink and drug driving.

Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner David Keane said: "It will be great to the see the communities of Cheshire getting behind their teams over the coming weeks. During my election campaign people told me they want to feel safer on the streets, so I fully support the Constabulary's campaign to ensure this great sporting event is a safe and happy one."

Superintendent McDonnell added: "We want to remind people that we will respond robustly to anyone committing offences or acting in an anti-social manner. By drinking sensibly and behaving responsibly we can all help to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time."
