Man tries to lure teenage girl into his van on Davey Lane

Pupils are being warned to extra vigilant on their journey to and from school after a 13-year-old girl was approached by a man who tried to encourage her to get into his vehicle.

The teenager was walking along Davey Lane in the direction of Heyes Lane when she was approached by a male driving a white van just after 4.30pm on Wednesday, 11th May.

The driver stopped and said "Why don't you jump in, it's quicker than walking". The girl declined and the male sped off when another vehicle drove past.

The man was white and wearing a black hooded top and black cap. The white van had scratches on it but the police have no further details.

Officers attended the scene and conducted a search of the local area, but there was no trace of the vehicle.

Inspector Claire Jesson said: "The child in this case had the presence of mind to ignore the man and report the incident immediately.

"At no stage were attempts made to grab or physically coerce the girl, but Police treat all incidents of this type extremely seriously."

Anyone who sees suspicious activity should contact police on 101 quoting incident number 603 of 11/5/16.
