Thousands gather as soap stars switch on Christmas lights

Thousands of residents and visitors came together in the village centre this evening to mark the start of the festive season with the Alderley Edge Christmas lights switched on.

This fabulous community event, organised by Alderley Edge Traders Action Group, is believed to have attracted the largest crowd ever who gathered on London Road to see Hollyoaks actor and singer Ashley Taylor Dawson switch on the lights.

He was joined on stage by Coronation Street stars Antony Cotton (Sean Tully) and Samia Ghadie (Maria Sutherland), the winners of the school's poster competition - Olivia Lloyd-Jones from Year 6 at Alderley Edge Primary School, and Nicole Reeves from Year 6 at Alderley Edge School for Girls - as well as Father Christmas.

For the second consecutive year, the popular event had the added attraction of a Christmas market down London Road with 40 stallholders, including local businesses Aldeli and The Botanist, whilst the little ones were able to enjoy a giant snow globe and fairground rides.

New for this year there was also a dog show where pampered pooches competed for the title of best dog and best fancy dressed which Layla won (scroll through the photos above to see Layla in her finest).

Throughout the evening talented local performers took to the stage, which was hosted by Heart FM DJ Lorna Bancroft and Oliver Dunn, including the AESG saxophone group, Alderley & District Scout Band, Rokits, The Bennetts, Ryleys School Choir and Luis Sullivan.

After the light switch on the crowd were entertained with open mic performances, organised by The Yard, including performances by Kimmy Beatbox, Tom Di Domenico, Max Culley, Catherine Taylor Dawson and Danny McCabe.

Great evening and well done to all the organisers, it was a true success and a pleasure to wander about the village with no vehicles in sight.

What about getting the Town Council to shut the road more regularly and organise say a monthly market of some sort on the high street, its a fantastic setting and would attract lots of new business to the village.

Well done again and lets hope the TC can take the village up another level.
