New memorial garden opened at Alderley Edge Cemetery

An overgrown area in Alderley Edge cemetery has been transformed into a special place where the bereaved can remember their loved ones.

A new memorial garden at Alderley Edge cemetery was officially opened today (Friday 13th November) by Cllr Lesley Smetham, Deputy Chairman of Orbitas Bereavement Services.

Orbitas have taken a hidden piece of ground which was previously used as an unofficial tipping area and, with the aid of the Community Payback Team have cleared the area of overgrowth, tipped white goods and general garden waste and set out the first stage of the garden consisting of sanctums, granite benches and a memorial tower. These will provide local people with a choice of memorial for cremations.

Cllr Lesley Smetham, Deputy Chairman said "We know that the loss of a loved one is very sad and a difficult time for families. It is hoped that this new memorial garden will not only give solace and comfort to people who have lose someone but that it will also give them strength for the future."

Cllr Penny Butterill, Director added "This memorial garden was designed to focus on the celebration of life as much as the mourning of death we hope that family and friends will find comfort and peace here, this is a special place in which to remember their loves ones."

There is sufficient ground primarily laid to lawn in which to introduce more options when the initial section is full.

Hopefully there will eventually be statuary in place. The old Parish Council voted to spend up to £5,000 on this.
The £5,000 was earmarked, some time ago, to be used to commemerate the Queen's jubilee. This memorial garden was thought to be a better use of that money.
I'm sure the new Parish Council will go along with that.
The Parish Council's web site should still have pictures of that statuary, if you wish to see it.

So pleased to see the garden is now being used. Well done to all concerned for their hard work. As Duncan says the PC passed a resolution to use the £5000 allocated to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee to be used for statuary and seating in the garden.

I think it fair to say that Duncan Herald put a great deal of effort into the general improvement of The Cemetery and its condition improved immeasurably under his stewardship.

The new Memorial Garden is another significant improvement and (I am sure) will be much appreciated by those who visit.
