Stevens Street to undergo series of closures during building works

DSCN0875

Temporary changes to the traffic flow on Stevens Street will be put in place over the next few months whilst building work is being carried out to create a new development in the centre of the village.

7 Stevens Street, which was last used as a bookmakers but has been unoccupied for years, has been demolished as part of the scheme to create eight 2-bedroom apartments above the two retail units - which will be occupied by Henry Johnstone Jewellers and Margaret Dabbs.

In order for the works to be carried out safely, Stevens Street will be closed for 20 separate days, from its junction with London Road for approximately 100 metres, between 9am and 4pm on 20 separate dates between 13th July and 25th September.

Additionally, a two way system will be introduced on Stevens Street, for its entire length on 20 separate dates between 13th July and 25th September to allow traffic to travel in both directions between 9am and 4pm.

To accommodate the flow of two way traffic on these dates the parking bays along Stevens Street will be suspended between 9am and 4pm.

As I walked through the village this afternoon, both Stevens Street and Brown Street were temporarily closed due to the building works being carried out.

Given the shortage of parking spaces in the village, does the panel think that suspending parking on Stevens Street between 9am - 4pm (so that the road can carry two-way traffic) is an odd plan?

Would it not be better to keep the current parking provision and have traffic move in one direction up Stevens Street and the other direction down Clifton Street?

Just a thought.

20 days sounds excessive just to demolish a building and don't use safety as an excuse for saving money. A higher safety fence will do that or closing the road when a sensitive bit has to be removed. Who approved 2 roads being closed on the same day - not a good idea.
