The Governing Body of Wilmslow High School have appointed James Pullé, 49, to the position of headteacher.

Previously deputy headteacher at the school since 2007, Dr Pullé comes from a family of teachers, police officers and priests.

He said: "I passionately believe in the power of education to bring about progress for individuals and society. I genuinely enjoy working with young people, and I get great satisfaction from helping them to learn and develop."

After state schooling in Devon, higher education at Royal Holloway University of London and teacher training in Nottingham, Dr Pullé spent three years as a history teacher and sixth form tutor at Bishop Heber High School in Malpas, Cheshire. His next move was to St Aelred's Catholic High School in Newton-le-Willows, first as head of history and then as head of sixth form where he says he learnt a lot about the features of faith schools.

He came to Wilmslow High School in 2001. His appointment as assistant head included responsibility for data analysis, strategic development of ICT and the promotion of different approaches to teaching.

Dr Pullé said "In this role I made considerable use of the research skills I had developed at university while studying for a PHD on British colonial policy towards Singapore. From the start I have felt very much at home in the school and its local community."

'No doubt this was partly due to family connections. My wife Fiona started her teaching career at Lindow and then Gorsey Bank primary schools while my father-in-law was in the Cragg family bakery business in Alderley Edge from leaving Wycliffe Avenue School until retirement.

"But ultimately more important are the feelings of pride one feels at working in Wilmslow High School, for the values of courtesy and respect that it stands for, the remarkable opportunities it offers all young people and the commitment to quality of everyone involved with the organisation, whether as employees, voluntary supporters or family members.

"Few things give me greater pleasure than to hear visitors to the school talk about the polite and thoughtful manner in which they have been treated by the students they have met.

"I feel very honoured and excited to have been given the responsibility of leading Wilmslow High School during its next stage of evolution. I very much look forward to working with our students, staff, parents and governors over the next few years to ensure that this school continues to serve the needs of Wilmslow, its surrounding communities and the wider world."

Away from the classroom, Dr Pullé said he enjoys spending time with family and friends, visiting beautiful and interesting places, helping with church and community projects and reading – especially works of history and current affairs, along with the occasional detective story.

Dr Pullé takes over from Gill Bremner who spent 17 years at Wilmslow High School, for the last 7 of which she was headteacher.

Congratulation Dr Pullé. I don't have children at the high school but everybody I talked to about this vacant position said that they hoped you would get it.
