A man has died after being struck by a train at Alderley Edge station this morning.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesperson said: "BTP officers were called to the line close to Alderley Edge Railway Station, Cheshire on Sunday 1st March 2015 after a report that a person had been struck by a train.

"Officers from BTP and Cheshire Police attended the incident, which was reported to police at 09.54 hours and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

"Paramedics from the Cheshire Ambulance Service also attended but the male was pronounced dead at the scene.

"A file will be prepared for the coroner."

The train involved was the Arriva Trains Manchester Piccadilly to Cardiff Service.

Following the tragic incident, passengers travelling between Manchester and Crewe experienced delays for several hours, and no trains were stopping at Alderley Edge.

Trains are now running normally and the station has reopened.
