A 10-year-old runner from Alderley Edge has won a silver medal in this week's Cheshire County Cross Country Championships.

James Doorbar competed against 29 other under 11 boys from running clubs all over Cheshire on Saturday, 3rd January. He came second in the 1800m race, run on a very boggy course at Bolesworth Castle.

The year 6 pupil at Mottram St Andrew Academy has been running for Macclesfield Harriers since he turned 9 years old, which is the minimum age for joining.

In addition to winning a silver medal for his individual performance, James also achieved a bronze team medal for Macclesfield Harriers with his teammates Thomas Roberts and Eddie Mills.

His mother Fiona explained "James' race strategy today was to get a good start and lead from the start as this was a very short distance for him. James runs the Bramhall park run most Saturday mornings which is a part hilly 5K and consistently finishes 1st in his age category, with a personal best time of 21minutes 14 seconds.

"He likes running because it's fun and he likes to win."

James also runs in the Staffordshire league, in which he and his teammates just missed out on a team medal this season. He is still to complete the season for the Manchester CC league, as is running at Heaton Park on Saturday 10th January and he also won two out of the three races in the inter school meetings back in September and October.

Fiona added "James is too young this season to qualify for the inter county champs which is in Birmingham in March, but is keen to qualify and run next season."
