Call for First World War memories

As the centenary of the World War 1 approaches preparations are underway to create an exhibition to mark the anniversary.

Residents are being urged to search out any memorabilia and photos which can be shared with the local community.

Margaret Smith, of Alderley History Group, is looking to create a mobile exhibition which can be taken to the various events which are being held in and around Alderley Edge over the coming months. She is keen to hear from anyone whose relatives were involved in WW1, so they can share their personal accounts.

Margaret said "People who were involved in WW1 and the war effort might have their own personal stories, photos and memorabilia which they would be happy for us to photocopy, both for the exhibition and for the Alderley History Group to keep in our archives."

The exhibition is just one of many events and activities taking place, others include a service at St Mary's Church Nether Alderley on July 28th and Marsden Silver Prize Band will be performing a concert with an emphasis on the Centenary of the outbreak of the First World War on Sunday 13th July.

If you have any information you would like to share contact Margaret Smith on 01625 585802, if you leave a message she will get back to you as soon as possible.

If you are holding any events in Alderley Edge to mark the centenary of the World War 1 please send details to [email protected].

Love the photos particularly the wide pavements. No illegal decking or parked cars in sight :)

The house which formed part of Mount Carmel School on Wilmslow Road was from around 1916 to maybe 1919 a recovering hospital for wounded troops .My grandmother Margaret Randles was an auxillary nurse there.

A large number of large houses were turned over for use as small hospitals during the First World War. Brookdale in Alderley Edge (now a AESG building) and Alderley Park (Nether Alderley) were two such hospitals. Lady Katherine Stanley was Commandant of Alderley Park and Emily Fenton Armitage Hutton was Commandant of Brookdale.

In the 4 years that Brookdale was running (1915 - 1919) it treated 1817 patients (only one man died) and by the end it had 73 beds in operation. Some open air wards proved to be an asset.

Emily died in February 1919 and a large funeral was held at St.Philips officiated by both the Vicar and also the Rector of Alderley, the Rev. C Welland. Emily’s body was then conveyed up to St.Mary’s and she was buried there next to the Stanley Mausoleum.

WW1 Exhibition to be held at St.Mary's Church on 20th / 21st September. Watch this space for further details!

St Philip & St James Church will be posting notes about Alderley Edge and WW1 every month in the Newssheet, which is distributed to every house in the village by volunteers. In the months which mark the centenary of the death of one of the men commemorated on the War Memorial they will be remembered. The first one will be Jack Gibbons in February 2015. Any information about any of them which can be incorporated into our tribute would be greatly appreciated. I will sharing information with Margaret Smith and I can be contacted on 01625 584566.
