Following the launch of our new 'Village People' series. Here's our sixth interview.

During the series the intention is to feature local people from a variety of backgrounds and different occupations. If you would like to feature in the 'Village People' series or suggest someone who would make a good candidate then please email me.

Full name: Graham McLelland

Age: 65

Occupation: Retired company chauffeur (prior to January 1988 I had the family taxi business in Alderley Edge).

Marriage status: Married to Annie in 1970, in fact I think we were the first couple to be married in the new St Pius Church. My wife Annie sings with the City of Manchester Opera so music is a great part of our lives.

Any children? Sarah who went to Nether Alderley School then to the convent school in Alderley Edge. She was Rose Queen in 1984 (crowned by the late Gillian Sanderson).

Where do you live? Bollin Fields Estate which was built by the Alderley UDC for returning men and women from the war.

How long have you lived in the village? 64 years.

Where did you move from and why?

I was born in Bethnall Green London, moved to Halstead Essex with my first adoption. I was then adopted again in January 1949 and brought up to Alderley Edge. I have had 4 names and 3 birth certificates: Derek Burnhams, Graham Richardson, Graham Moore and finally Graham McLelland. Quite a journey made with the help of my wife Annie and daughter Sarah.

What do you most like about living in Alderley Edge?

I enjoy the community spirit especially from the long time residents of the area. I love the beauty and peace of the Edge and I believe we are very lucky that the Miss Pilkingtons out bid the builders when this land was sold and handed it over to the National Trust.

What changes/improvements would you like to see in Alderley Edge?

I would like to see less heavy traffic in Alderley Edge especially up and down Macclesfield Road.

What have been the biggest changes to Alderley Edge since you have been here?

The number of houses being built, a big growth of population, 3 supermarkets and of course this fantastic web site.

What do you miss about the village that has since gone?

The many individual shops privately owned by the shop keepers who lived over their shops. I must mention here the Mrs Beaty post on the forum page because like many I remember most of those shops mentioned. I miss the old library and the Village Institute used for many lunches, Xmas festivities and jumble sales which most of us went to years ago. I also miss the Cottage Hospital which was given to the community by public donation and served the area well.

If there is one thing about Alderley Edge you could eliminate what would it be?

Dog walkers who think they can walk through the village and surrounding roads and the park and not clean up after their animals.

Describe Alderley Edge in 3 words? Historical, beautiful and warm.

What is your favourite way to spend a day out and about in Alderley Edge or the surrounding area?

Walking around the Edge, it is fantastic.

What is the most underrated thing about Alderley Edge?

The presence of the few remaining villagers who helped build this area.

What are the main myths about Alderley Edge? The idea that we are all millionaires.

If you didn't live in Alderley Edge where would you want to move to?

Difficult as these islands have everything - South West Scotland, Lake District and Anglesey.

My main hobbies are the two most important people in my life Annie and Sarah, classical music. I enjoy also big band music and Native American and Celtic.
