Our readers responses are printed below, in order of posting:

Stephen Holding: Haberdashery on Trafford Road?

Susan Dawson: Betty's draper store, it used to be on Trafford Road Alderley Edge. Where the dentist is now.

Alan Clayton: Looks like Hidderleys haberdashery shop on London Road. Is the Alderley Rose there now?

Matt Smith: I think it's the Running Bear shop.

Vince Fogharty: I'm going for Chapel Rd.

Terry Bowes: Looks like Hidderleys. My mother worked there when she was 15 in 1946 with a lady called Miss Dutton out of Moss Lane. The was where the Alderley Rose is. Hidderleys used to live on Moss Road then.

Diana Bullock: "Hidderleys" is the only shop I can think of, although I am sure it did not look quite that old fashioned when I was taken in there for my little dresses, etc. but I don't know when the shop opened and I am talking about the fifties. Anyway, I may be completely wrong.

Harold Adshead: Could this be Hidderleys drapers shop ? . Where the Alderley Rose is now

Alan Clayton, Terry Bowes, Diana Bullock and Harold Adshead all identified the correct location of the photo.

It is of Hidderley's store which was located on the corner of London Road and Brown Street, prior to the Alderley Rose.

Hidderley's opened in 1868 and supplied the village with everything from household linens, underwear and men's suits to workers uniforms and bobbins of cotton.

It was initially run by Tabitha Hidderley, then her son Harry Hidderley took it over. He had two daughters Valerie and Josephine, who worked in the store part time as young girls.

One of the daughters Valerie Jones, who kindly provided the photo above and now lives in Wilmslow, said she was born at Hidderley's and was displayed on the counter within hours of being born. At that time Harry and his wife Phyllis lived with Tabitha, but moved out after Valerie was born.

The family were sad they didn't reach the centenary as the store closed in 1962 or 1963. The Alderley Rose opened within the year which makes the business over 50 years old.

Valerie is uncertain when the photo was taken but thinks it could have been around the end of WW1.

Many thanks to Alderley Edge History Society for sending the photo on to me and their continued support in answering my questions about the history of Alderley Edge.
