Whit Parade 1958

Ann01 003

The above photo has kindly been sent to us by Graham Dilliway.

It was taken in 1958 and shows the Methodist Chapel Whit Parade passing down Chapel Road.

Graham's sister Ann is the first 'carer' in the grey suit holding hands with the young boy in the dark sweater and light shorts. She is joined in the parade by a number of children, carers and passers by.

Graham, who now lives in Horsham, Sussex told alderleyedge.com "Ann and I were regular attenders at the chapel, and I still remember walking behind the chapel banner and the band as we paraded around the village once a year.

"Ann would have been 18 in 1958, and now lives in Sunbury-on-Thames. We used to live in a house called Croston on Tempest Road, it was the coachman's house for Croston Towers, demolished at the end of WW2."

Dorathea Bradbury was our Sunday School teacher around this time, She is a lovely lady who described me as a cherub.

Yes, I think it is Margaret holding Sandra's hand. I am further down the parade (I was then Diana Boorman) and Anne Chad is behind me. Miss Bradbury is now in her nineties. Thank you Graham for sending the photo.

Yes, David--it's definitely Margaret Hewitt holding my hand. I remember most of these kids who still live in the village and now have grandchildren! There ís still a wonderful community spirit within the Methodist Church--some of those pictured still attend, and even though I don't any more, I still feel warmly welcomed on the odd visit I make and have happy memories of those days in the 1950's.

cheers for that Sandra, you are definitely right about the community spirit in the chapel
It makes me feel good that I can still recognise our Margaret especially after all these years
I was just wondering if I was in the parade?
