An 8-year-old schoolboy from Alderley Edge is fund-raising for the hospital that looks after grandfather, affectionately known as ' Pompa'.

Jake Ashley, from Alderley Edge Community Primary School, will be riding the 11-mile Wizard Trail next week to raise money to provide comforts for those patients sharing his Pompa's ward at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital at Oswestry.

Keith Grantham, 78, was born in Duke Street and has lived in Alderley Edge all his life. He was paralysed 39 years ago when a simple kidney investigation went wrong.

His daughter Vanessa explained "He was sent to the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital for six months rehabilitation. Since then he has had many stays at this hospital. They do a fantastic job and the staff are hard working and caring.

"This is the first time Jake has known his Pompa be in Oswestry hospital. When Jake was due to be born, my Dad was admitted to Oswestry with a sore that got infected with MRSA when being treated locally, he pulled through and was allowed to see his first grandchild Jake when he was 8 weeks old, on his 69th birthday."

Jake has raised £250 in the past ten weeks and his last fund raising event enabled a vehicle to be purchased to take wheelchair bound patients out for home visits and to the dentist, opticians etc.

He is riding the Wizard Trail on Sunday, 26th May, which starts at Artist Lane, goes round Hare Hill, Henbury and back down Hocker Lane.

Jake said "It is very sad to see the people in the hospital. One fell over a dog, one slipped in a bathroom and one fell off a ladder and they can't even eat their food themselves. He said everyone there was very kind and if I can raise money to make things easier for them I would be happy."

He will be joined on the ride by his mummy and his friends Lucas, Michael and Niam.

Jake can be sponsored at [email protected] or by calling in at his home in Moss Road ( which many will know!).
