Public loo under threat from closure

The automatic public toilet off West Street, which is understood to cost around £30,000 a year to run, could be closed in the next couple of years.

Cheshire East Council are looking to either transfer responsibility for the pay-per-use toilet at South Street car park to the Parish Council or close the facility.

The Council is not obliged to offer this facility as the provision of public conveniences is a discretionary service, so they are part of a range of services being offered to town and parish councils.

If the transfer does not go ahead CEC are proposing to give notice on 1st April 2014 and close the toilet on 31st March 2015.

Cllr Matthew Lloyd commented "It's phenomenally expensive. The price of £30,000 has been bandied about."

Some town and parish councils have taken on responsibility for their public toilets, whilst others have declined to.

As an alternative approach to providing the facility for residents and visitors to the village, Alderley Edge Parish Council discussed the possibility of introducing a scheme similar to the one set up in Poynton.

Cllr Frank Keegan explained "If they were to take it on it would have cost Poynton £30,000 so what they've done is allocated a sum in the budget and gone and made deals with individual shops to say will you allow the public to use your facilities and they've come to a financial arrangement with them.

"So for a small fraction of what it would have cost them they can now direct people to where members of the public can spend a penny.

"It makes more sense than trying to keep something that is infrequently used."

Cllr Sue Joseph said "We certainly have enough premises that have the facilities for their customers to use so we'd possibly stand a good chance of making that kind of deal with two or three of them."

Cllr Keegan agreed to find out more about the Poynton scheme.

I have contacted Cheshire East Council to request how much the public toilet costs them each year and how many times it has been used in the past year.

Heres an idea, ill retire and people can come and use my toilet in my house for £25,000 a year thus saving the tax payers £5,000 a year.

Who the hell signs the cheque every year for this 30k????? Another example of this council wasting money. And not only that, how can it cost 30k a year? These are lottery figures for what is essentially a cleaning job and a lick of paint every now and then.
