Fitness class under threat after 30 years

Local fitness classes, which have run continuously in the village since 1983, will close in July unless more support can be drummed up from the community.

The Fitness League, a nationwide exercise network which is supported and part funded by Sport England, deliver classes teaching movement and exercise, which are designed to improve posture and well-being, as well as rhythmic exercise to music.

Local teacher of many years standing, Janet Davies said "Unfortunately local numbers have been reducing over the last twelve months as a number of our members have moved out of the area and others have had to give up owing to ill health. Unless we can increase our numbers we will have to cancel the classes in Alderley."

Classes are held every Tuesday morning at 10am in the Methodist Church Hall, they last an hour and cost £4 a session. The classes are open to both men and women of all ages, though they tend to primarily attract ladies of a mature age.

The classes are based on using gentle but effective exercise and dance movement to help improve fitness, flexibility and strength whilst having fun. Everyone works at their own pace; no pressure is applied to work faster, it is not a gym session.

Local resident Ann Holding, who has been a member for five years, was introduced to the Fitness League when a friend visiting from New Zealand, who was a member of the Auckland Fitness League, wanted to attend a local class.

She said "I had no idea the fitness league existed until then, and expect there are a lot of people like me, who have still never heard of us. Come along and try it, its fun and I have made a lot of friends through the League, improved my posture, fitness & flexibility and look forward to my Tuesday sessions."

Janet added "The idea is for the exercises we do to give each member that 'feel good' factor. I can assure prospective new members that at the classes they will receive a warm welcome, experience a friendly atmosphere and hopefully enjoy working with a teacher who gives each member the personal attention necessary; come and meet us and give it a go."

To learn more about the Fitness League please give Janet a call on 01625 585970, go along on a Tuesday morning or visit http://www.thefitnessleague.com/. The next class is not until 9th April.
