Postbox removed from London Road

Following the relocation of Alderley Edge Post Office to West Street this week and a request from the property owner, the postbox has been removed from outside the former Post Office on London Road today.

A new postbox will be located on West Street, outside the new post office but this cannot happen until planning permission has been obtained.

John Arden, Collection Planning Manager at Royal Mail said "We provide postbox facilities based on housing and business density, proximity of other postboxes, safe and secure access for customers and staff and local planning issues. We believe that customers will be adequately served by alternative posting facilities located nearby."

Nearby postboxes include:

  • Corner of Chapel Road and London Road - last collection 5.45pm Monday to Friday and 11am on Saturdays.
  • Corner of South Street and Chorley Hall Lane - last collection 4.45pm Monday to Friday and 11am on Saturdays.
  • Corner of Talbot Road and Moss Lane - last collection 5.30pm Monday to Friday and 11am on Saturdays.

I'm concerned by the expression: "a new postbox"...I was expecting to read:"the postbox will be re-sited at....".

The one we had before is a piece of British history and I do hope it isn't being scrapped and replaced with a modern monstrosity or a simple hole in the new post office wall?

Stephen, I asked one of the men who was removing the postbox this morning if this one would be placed outside the new Post Office once they had obtained planning permission. He said no because it was cracked so it would be a new postbox.

Knocked down in his prime. All those years of loyal service and thats how he gets treated at the end. Then the humiliation of it being in the news. I hope he gets taken on by someone and spends his retirement in someone's garden. Poor old soul.

To me it just makes sense to have a Post box outside a Post Office, so I hope that a new post box appears soon - this would then also indicate that we could hope that the Post Office will stay put for a while, otherwise I'm not so sure...
