R.I.P. alderleyedge.com?

rip2

In a departure from my usual editorial style, I have deliberately used a sensational headline to grab your attention.

The future of alderleyedge.com hangs in the balance. Unless things radically change the service I provide is simply not sustainable.

alderleyedge.com is now three and a half years old, during which time I have worked tirelessly to deliver a quality product that I believe has had a positive impact on the community.

alderleyedge.com now receives over 15,000 unique browsers and 38,000 visits (user sessions) a month across the web site and our mobile app. To put that into context the population of Alderley Edge is circa 5,000 and the circulation of the Wilmslow Express in Alderley Edge (SK9 7) is 1,691.

It is almost certainly the leading local media, on or offline, in Alderley Edge by a significant margin.

Despite the success in building an engaged and loyal audience I have failed to generate revenue anywhere near commensurate with the time and effort involved in almost single handedly running this website, along with wilmslow.co.uk, prestbury.com and knutsford.com.

Whilst the local audience has predominantly moved online the marketing budgets of local and regional businesses, and organisations such as the Council, have not followed that trend.

During this slow and progressive transition from print to digital the economics of providing news and information at a local level are broken. This is a problem companies large and small around the world are wrestling with from traditional local newspapers to AOL in the US who has spent over $130m rolling out its patch.com web sites.

No one at this point appears to have an answer to the problem but Martin and I are passionate about Alderley Edge and committed to trying to make alderleyedge.com work.

We are currently undertaking a complete review of the alderleyedge.com proposition with the intention of launching a new web site, that not only better serves our readers but also gives local businesses and organisations more ways to connect with the local community.

In order to help us we are asking for five minutes of your time. We have put together a short survey that will help us better understand what is important to our readers and provide us with information that will hopefully help make alderleyedge.com commercially viable and ensure its longevity.

UPDATE 1st Nov: We have now closed our survey. Many thanks to all of you that took the time to respond. It is greatly appreciated.

I suppose I'm not a typical contributor to your site as I don't live in Alderley Edge but my family responsibilities mean that I spend a lot of time here, and I have considerable interest in things that happen here.

Please don't disappear, I think you would be greatly missed. Your interesting presentations give local people the opportunity to see what is really going on in the area and to share their views and ambitions for the village.

It would be a sin to allow alderleyedge.com to vanish. This is the only vehicle that keeps residents in touch with what is really happening in the village. If it needs to be by subscription then so be it. Everyone who reads alderleyedge.com needs to show their support for what Lisa is doing.

It would be awful if you disappeared, I spend a lot times overseas, and you help me up to date with Alderley Edge. Please don't leave us!!!!

Lisa, have you actually asked local businesses whether they would be interested in advertising space? As a business owner, I have never been asked.

Losing this Newsletter would be a great shame for me. I am in the process of buying a property in Alderley Edge and signed up immediately to try and get some inside info. Consequently, I have learned a great deal about the village and being a Southerner moving North I knew absolutely nothing about the area!

Lisa, what you are doing on this website is right that you are not being paid is wrong. We have come to expect the web to be free or paid for by ads however do we look at or click on ads. I very rarely do. So should you be paid by subscription? I don't pay for any website at present. Your AE.com must be something exceptional if I would pay to look at it!!

Your website is one of the best, I don't know of another local one as fantastic as alderleyedge.com.

I appreciate everything you say but hope you manage to find a workable solution. Thank you for your great website, it's great.

I always look forward to finding your well-written and informative selection of stories in my inbox every Tuesday. Your e-mail came as a shock to me.

Sorry to hear of the problems. It would be a great shame if the site ceased to exist. I would be prepared to pay a similar amount of money as a weekly newspaper to ensure its continuance.

Lisa, I'm sorry to hear your problems. I must agree with you with the tweet you sent back to the MEN about "professional" journalists.
I'm sure that, as Sue has said, if larger advertisers are not forthcoming, then most of us I am sure would pay - like the Times - for info, Plus put in a small charge for the App.
It would be a great tragedy for the village if you were to close. I hope that from the post more Wilmslow and Knutsford businesses come forward to help support you.
No other website covers such a diverse range of issues.

gosh you have my attention. Alderleyedge.com is part of my daily read - as part of the community I find it invaluable and feel that it really connects the community. Not sure what to suggest to help as still in shock. I sincerely hope an answer can be found.

Well, I guess that all of us would be sad if AE.com folded. Whether enough of us would be willing to subscribe to the same/similar service is a moot point. I read the Guardian online every day - whether I would continue to do so if it was not free who knows. We all assume that everything we access on the Internet is free - but times are changing rapidly and many providers are in the same position as you are.

I guess that all you can do in the end is to levy a subscription and then see if enough people are interested - I have my doubts as most of us think that there IS such a thing as a free lunch - of course there isn't.

I think that if you have to depend on ads for your revenue the site would be the worse for it.

Good luck, whatever.

In the modern age surely our local website is the best place for public notices to be published, and might that help in terms of funding.

A very valid point Stephen. Unfortunately I believe out-dated government legislation currently means that the Council's hands are tied and they have to put statutory notices in the local newspaper irrespective of whether there is an alternative with greater reach. Absolutely crazy in this day and age.

It would be a great shame if the site ceased to exist, we look forward to reading about events taking place, the weather update and the discussion forum. Perhaps because of the time and the administration involved in running the site there may be a couple of local people who are able to help. Hope the problems with revenue sources solve the problems and the site keeps running.

Is it worth some thought that statutory notices concerning matters within the parish be published here as a service funded by the parish council.

It would be a huge loss. It is the only place you can actually find out what is really happening. I would certainly pay a subscription for this website.

I no longer live in Alderley, more is the pity, but spent 25 very happy and busy years in the village. I love catching up with all the news and having only just found you would be very sad to lose you. Subscription? Why not?

As a (very) regular reader and occasional contributor, I can only echo others dismay at the possibility of losing this invaluable site. May I suggest that, perhaps in addition to subscriptions, a voluntary contribution/donation scheme could be set-up? A couple of clicks and a paypal account might be simple enough to encourage those that can afford a little extra to 'chip in'.
Any surplus after site running costs could be given to a suitable local charity. Just my twopennyworth...

Have a look at the excellently-named Hopton Wafers community website (http://www.hoptonwafers.org) - "This website is sponsored and provided by Hopton Wafers Parish Council as a community resource. The Council's own pages can be found by following the link at the top of the page". Here, the Parish Council can be accessed direct, there are profiles of members with photographs and Council information. Couldn't Alderley Edge.com team up with AEPC in a similar fashion for its funding, to enable this community facility to continue?

Thank you very much to everyone who has taken the time to complete our
survey. We received over 400 responses within 48 hours and people have provided some very interesting feedback and suggestions.

We have also received a lot of emails from readers and some very kind words from people so thank you.

If you have not yet completed the survey and have 5 minutes please do, your
feedback would be much appreciated.

If you want to advertise, put in with alderleyedge.com.

The economy is picking up; so let's not lose alderleyedge.com at this time.
If you use a local facility, tell them if you saw them on alderleyedge.com.
Use alderleyedge.com more, to encourage advertisers.

The White Dental Spa has recently signed up as an advertiser on alderleyedge.com. I can honestly say that Lisa made this a very simple process with her professionalism and ideas. I would urge all businesses within Alderley Edge to contact Lisa, the advertising costs are extremely competitive and I for one hope to continue advertising in this modern and up-to-date LOCAL way - after all if we don't support our own locally, who will?

I can only add my words of support for Lisa and the excellent alderleyedge.com. I would be delighted to subscribe by direct debit either on a monthly or annual basis.
Hopefully many more people who have made their life in Alderley Edge would do so too, anxious, as I am, to see a real 'sense of community' grow here.
Hopefully local and national businesses will then use the opportunity to advertise on the site. With excellent software available to all today it is easy to provide Lisa with prepared 'ready to go' copy. It must make commercial sense!
Best wishes

Hi Paul, alderleyedge.com is the most successful and established of the four sites. If we cannot make alderleyedge.com sustainable then it does not bode well for the other sites.

Surprised and pleased to find this site - I was born and brought up in the area and still have relatives there. Keep up the good work and thanks for the revived memories of a lovely place.
