Getting Alderley Edge cycling

Image 1

CycleWilmslow, a community group promoting cycling, are canvassing the views of Alderley Edge residents as to whether they would like to take part in easy-going leisure rides starting from the village.

The group, set up in 2009 to lobby for better cycling provision, branched out into organising family rides from Wilmslow Artisan market last year. It is now keen to help residents in the Alderley area get in the saddle.

Rob Sawyer, CycleWilmlow Secretary said: "CycleWilmslow promotes cycling in the whole of the Wilmslow area and we sense that there is untapped demand for adult and family rides in Alderley Edge. If we receive positive feedback we will look at running a pilot ride in the coming months."

Anyone interested in joining rides from Alderley Edge is asked to contact Rob Sawyer via the Contacts section on www.cyclewilmslow.org.uk.

Decent, clear and continuous cycle routes would seem to be an important pre-requisite. It is noticeable how the cycle lane on the "old" A34 (Wilmslow Road) totally disappears after Harden Park on the way into Alderley Edge; added to this the amount of debris in the gutters, makes use of the cycle lanes that do exist, potentially hazardous. On a recent visit to Berlin, I was struck by how many cycle lanes (and cyclists) there are and how safe it felt to use them. We were told by our hosts that one of the reasons for this is that in Germany, in the event of an accident, the motorist is presumed guilty unless or until their innocence can be proven.
