Cheshire East Council has confirmed that a pavement parking ban is still being considered but it is awaiting guidance from the Government
During the public speaking section of the Highways and Transport Committee meeting on Thursday, 19th June, Mrs V Scaresbrook Congleton Sustainable Travel, asked "Since most pavements are in a hazardous condition for all, whether waklking or wheeling, are comprehensive pavement repairs proposed and is a pavement parking ban also proposed to reduce damage and restore safe space for users?"
Richard Hibbert, Head of Strategic Transport & Parking Services responded "A pavement parking ban is still to be considered but it is signalled by the Secretary of State for Transport but there is to be a national piece of guidance published, potentially accompanying the national transport strategy, in response to a consultation that the FT ran some considerable time ago now and it is clearly prudent for the council to await that national position for we decide how to proceed."
Councillor Mark Goldsmith said "Cheshire East Council is the leading in the patrol group, which is the group of councils outside of London that meet to discuss parking and the management of our roads and enforcement of our roads and it is something that we have been asking for for almost a decade. They have those powers of pavement in London but not outsdie of London and we would like them but the government has maybe kicked it into the long grass previously so we are hoping that more will come."
He added "I totally get your sentiment about pavements, yes we would love to improve them more but the £800,000 we have is not going to go very far on the pavements it owuld very veryquickl;y be swallowed up."
