The RVS Luncheon Club is celebrating its diamond anniversary with a traditional Christmas lunch at Alderley Edge Methodist Church on Tuesday 10th December.
Run entirely by Royal Voluntary Service volunteers, the Alderley Edge Luncheon Club has been serving up freshly prepared lunches for elderly people who live in the area for sixty years - offering the opportunity to socialise once or twice a week whilst enjoying a two course meal which costs just £4, inclusive of tea and coffee.
Anne Bale, President of the Luncheon Club said "Christmas lunch has always been free to members and guests. In the early days local traders donated 10 guineas to pay for the food. It is not clear how much a regular lunch cost in 1964 but at the beginning of 1968 the meal cost 1/6d plus 2d for a cup of tea. That is a little less than 8p. Around 40 people attended each session and so the income would have been about £3.20."
New members are very welcome. Please phone Anne on 01625 582514 or email [email protected] to book a meal.
RVS regular Luncheon Club opens 1st October and closes after Christmas lunch on 10 December:
11.45am arrival for lunch at 12.15. Members depart at 1.15pm.
