New bus service axed after 5 weeks

A new bus service which runs between Macclesfield and Manchester Airport has been cancelled just five weeks after being launched.

The D&G Bus 130 Service launched on April 1st and travels from Macclesfield to Macclesfield Hospital, Alderley Edge, Wilmslow, Styal and terminates at Manchester Airport. The cancellation is effective from Monday 18th June, meaning the last day of operation will be Saturday 16th June.

The 130 Service was re-routed to Manchester Airport in April to retain a direct service for Wilmslow and Styal and to offer new connections from Macclesfield and Alderley Edge.

Chris Almond, Bus Network Manager D&G Bus Ltd, said "The reason for the cancellation is that we are not making enough money on the service - in this case the money taken on the bus does not even cover the operating costs so we are in the position where we are incurring a considerable loss to provide the service."

I presumed that a public bus service was indeed, just that, and not merely a business opportunity.

So, first the 130 Arriva service was cut in half by wanting to run hourly and killing Sunday service:

Then D & G stepped in so it wouldn't seem as bad with an additional 130 service on a different route, fair enough:

And now this development.

“Too late” was the cry! You build services like these in advance - in other words as the airport is being expanded years ago. And if it’s to be any use to an airport it has to run 24/7. Just like the Leicester Derby Nottingham East Midlands airport services do. I checked in at 0520 the other day. Any bus then? No.

Just gets more and more difficult for pensioners. Just to get to the circus and back in Macclesfield on public holiday cost me £33.00 by taxi

Its a shame. We are supposed to be encouraged less cars on the road! Where is the impetus for people to use public bus services if they can't rely on them? So is the service finished completely or will it continue as 130 as published in January, not extended to the airport?

I had no idea that a bus service was available to the airport from Macclesfield. Perhaps if there had been more publicity about the service it would have been more successful ..
such a shame
