Alderley Edge pays its respects on Remembrance Sunday

Alderley Edge marked Remembrance Day this afternoon with a parade and church service to remember those who fought and sacrificed their lives while serving for their country.

Organised by the Alderley Edge British Legion, the parade included representatives from the Royal British Legion, Alderley Edge Parish Council, Cheshire Police, British Red Cross, WRVS, local churches, and the Bugler.

They were joined in the parade by local scouts, cubs, beavers, guides and brownies.

Residents lined the streets to pay their respects and observe the parade which departed from the Festival Hall and marched along Moss Lane, Trafford Road and Chapel Road before proceeding down London Road to the War Memorial on Ryleys Lane.

Following prayers and the wreath laying ceremony the Service of Remembrance was held at St Philips & St James Church.

It was a little strange to watch the parade progress down London Road behind a Scottish pipe band, to the strains of Scotland The Brave.

But not as strange as returning home to watch the highlights of the service at the London Cenotaph where the band played "Oh What A Lovely War!"

Bagpipe players were commended for their bravery during the first world war. They fearlessly led soldiers out of the trenches. Research has since revealed that the playing of bagpipes was highly successful in rousing soldiers into combat. A special service was held, recently, in France to honour the bravery of the pipers.

Handforth's display of large poppies on lamp posts and signage has been spectacular, and puts the surrounding areas to shame.
