Eating out can be healthy

Gusto's new updated Healthy Living Menu, which became available this week, has been "designed to look after the inner you" whilst proving wrong the old saying that "if it's good for you it can't be interesting".

The menu has been especially developed for Gusto by Living Ventures' Executive Chef John Branagan in partnership with nutritional biochemist Jeannette Jackson and in association with the Adidas Wellness Clinics.

The Healthy Living Menu has been designed to let customers know exactly what they are eating. As a representative from Gusto explained "We have had each dish assessed to find its calorie count as well as its fat, carbohydrate, fibre and cholesterol properties. These assessments are listed underneath each item on the menu." In addition to promoting good health the menu caters for those with special requirements such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Whilst Gusto are ahead of the game in placing nutritional information on menus The Food Standards Agency (FSA) are certainly exploring the issue. According to FSA chief executive Tim Smith "We’re used to seeing nutrition information when we’re shopping and there is no compelling reason why we shouldn’t have more consistent information about nutrition when we eat out".

I'm sure there are many people who aren't interested in the contents of their meals when having a night out but the results from an omnibus survey carried out by the FSA in June 2008 suggested that 85% of consumers agreed that restaurants, pubs and cafes have a responsibility to make clear what is in the food they serve. More than 80% of respondents said that nutrition information would be most useful if provided at the point they choose or order food, such as on menus.
