Needles found in Alderley park

A parish councillor reported at this week's meeting that drug needles have been found in Alderley Edge Park.

Whilst discussing the state of flower beds and rubbish in the park, Cllr Melanie Conner told fellow councillors that she had found some needles in there one Sunday morning.

I spoke with PCSO Jim Newns about this issue and whether he feels it is a regular occurrence in the park.

Jim said "I have not had any reports regarding needles before but my advice if anyone does find needles is to be very very careful. Do not pick them up for obvious reasons but if possible stay with them and get someone to dispose of them properly, which an officer will be able to do."

He added "It is imperative that you contact myself or Cheshire Police if you find needles as we need to know where they are being used."

PCSO Jim Newns can be contacted on on 07948522130, alternatively call Cheshire Police on 101.

Would it be an idea for the council to arrange a thorough clean up considering the health hazard (HepB, HIV etc) to children who may not realise the dangers. If for example a public highway had a large and dangerous pot-hole, there would be the obligation to make it safe. Does the same logic apply here?

Rob,

you're right, it's a public health issue. My friend's kids play in that park.

Why aren't the police taking DNA samples off the needles they recover? or being more pro active about this very sad and dangerous practice. Children play here and people could inadvertently pick them up or pierce their skin and it is a massive public health issue. I think the PCSO is taking a very relaxed approach. Let’s see some pro-active policing to stop this behaviour
