Do you shop at the new supermarket?

I for one was disappointed to see the recent opening of the new supermarket over the road from the Co-operative.  I refuse to enter the place for fear of the impact on other local businesses.  What do you think of the new store?

I would not be seen dead in there!!!! We never needed it before and we don’t need it now!!  The co-op is so much better. From my observations, not many people shop in it anywhere. In fact, my nephew observed a builder draw cash out of the cash machine and cross the road back to the co-op this morning.  Hooray for him!!!

What impact is it going to have on local business?

I can only see that the butchers, cake shop and chemists could be affected. (the Co op doesn’t count as it’s a nasty big company as well)

People who go to Tesco for bits and bobs, wouldn’t dream of spending £10 on 2 pork chops from the pricey local butchers. The cake shop I feel will see more trade due to higher passing trade, and again, noone will make a choice of going to Tesco for a cake, if they want a proper one.

The chemist have everything, Tesco have a few shelves of basics.

I would prefer if people just said they hate Tesco. The very same people probably shop at Waitrose, do online shopping for the cheapest deal on a flat screen tv, and drive a big foreign car :-)

Actually I don’t consisder the Co-op as a “nasty big company” all the staff are local, most of them have worked there from when it was Somerfield. It is also run on a much more local basis and owned by its members not its shareholders.

As for hating Tesco, actually I only hate the Tesco in Alderley “We do not need it!!”  Oh, I don’t drive a huge car , shop in Waitrose or own a flat screen telly, but I do shop at the Coop.

“Nice looking shop, fits well in the town” Doesn’t this say it all?We were a village before the arrival of this abomination, too tall, wrong bricks, typical Tesco non architecture, no consideration for the residents of Clifton Street, especially the one who is robbed of light. It broke several of the so called planning regulations yet lo and behold it still stands intact with its farcical chimneys which were supposed to make it fit in with the fantastic examples of Victorian architecture which surround it. To me the whole exercise sums up what is wrong with the entire political structure of this country. Set against the acquisition of gain by large institutions, such as local councils, property developers and especially companies such as Tesco, the individual has to run the risk of bankrupting himself if he wants to defend his rights.

I always shop at the Coop for preference but as a Friend of the Earth I would not drive into Wilmslow if I could get what I needed from Tesco. I do however believe that the Coop is a more ethical company than Tesco and nearly everybody one speaks to seems to have a tale of Tesco forcing its overlarge presence and horrendous non architecture on rural communities where for aesthetic reasons if no other it is less than welcome.

For all the same reasons that Vivienne Marr has expressed I do not shop at Tesco supermarket. However, in the unlikely event of there be no alternative in the village,( we do have smaller shops as well,) then I would use the bus or walk to Wilmslow, I can’t think of anything that would persuade me to enter that building.

I wonder do Tesco seek world domination and whatever happened to ‘People Power’?
Vote with your feet and shop around.

I would presume the staff at tesco are local as well

The co op has a turnover of £11.6 billion and a profit of £402 million and is the 5th largest food retailer in the UK. Thats a fairly big company.

What I’m hearing a lot of is ‘we dont need it’

When its still open in 1 years time, what will you say then? It will only stay open if it turns a profit. Does this mean it ‘was needed’.

You might well “presume” the staff at Tesco are local, do you have any evidence?    Fact, Tesco pay most staff on minimum wage and part time hours. They are not a repuable company, they are not an ethical company, they do buy in bulk for as little as possible (ie. not remotely paying a fair price to the producer).  The coop might be the 5th largest high street supermarket, but they do buy local and always have given the producer and consumer a fair price.    As I say, we don’t need Tesco and won’t need it in 1 year or 10 years. Not ever! Tesco probably wouldn’t release the trading figures for the one store anyway, so any loss that they make would be swallowed up in the accounts.

and the evidence of co op staff being local? If the tesco staff are payed so poorly, then they would need to be local, as they couldnt afford to travel far.

I wish it was not there but it is and lets be honest it looks better than the terrible row of empty shops that was there before it. I will go in it and shop because what is it proving by staying out, Tesco won’t go under because a few people refuse to shop in the Alderley Edge store.

True, Tesco won’t go under just because a few people in Alderley edge don’t shop in that store.  If enough people don’t shop in the store it proves that it is not needed. Which it isn’t!!  Is a great big unused monstrosity better than a few empty shop units?

theres always people in it when i walk by. I think it should just be accepted that the shop will not shut, and move the thread on ;-)

True, they do have the odd customer. it is a free country, if people want to let huge unethical companies like Tesco get away with monopolising our fantastic small villages that is their choice. Would you like the thread to move onto a more general discussion of the way large companies like Tesco, just have the right to do as they please because they have the money. The thread is “Do you shop at the new supermarket?”    Answer NO!!

you’ll need to try and not get so upset, tell you what, I’ll take you for a nice coffee a Costa, or I could even stretch to a meal at McDonalds ;-)

The empty shops were an eyesore so at least the Tesco Store looks better even if it remains quiet. I very much doubt it will never have any customers, every time I pass people are in spending money. I wish it was not there, I wish the old shops were occupied with the tills ringing and looking smart and pretty along the front but sadly we all know the state that row of shops was in. It was off putting and horrible on the eye. I like the new building, wish it was smaller and it would be nice if it was not occupied by Tesco.
