Tomfoolery

Does anyone have a clue what is happening to the eye sore on London Road. May months ago work started on the previously named Alderley Rose (chinese restaurant) and since then it appears to have stopped and started several times. Nothing seems to be progressing. There are two big bags of sand in the road on Brown Street previously where the skip was as well as two large mattresses on the pavement!!! Not sure where these have come from. The building is covered by boarding and scaffolding and generally looks a complete mess. How much longer is this going on??

I wonder if it is in a queue behind The County, which closed in 2009 and Yesterdays/ Millennium, which closed in…... 2004!

I am surprised the state of this building has been allowed to continue for as long as it has. Its a disgrace and why have no councillors made a comment over it?

Hi Sarah,

herewith a parish Councillor making a comment, as you asked.
I found a man who knows; today I was told that work will start in approx. one week and the work will take approx.
three months and the end result will be a restaurant.
Hope this helps.

Thankyou Duncan.

I was more concerned with why the building looks like it does than how long the work will take. Its an eyesore and a magnet for flyposting.

So here we are, another 4 months on and still no tangible sign of progress on this eyesore.
And, given the current concerns about parking, it is particularly frustrating to see a whole line of spaces (perhaps 4 or 5 or so) blocked off 24/7 for the apparently exclusive use of the builders who are “working” on the building.
Do they actually have the relevant authority to fence off this space all day and night, including weekends when they are not there, and if so, who has given it, and what conditions are attached?
Is it possible that someone could actually confirm what is happening, and importantly how long it is likely to take?

Hi Stewart

I pitched up at the parish council meeting last night and Tomfoolery was discussed.

I think the target date for completion was the end of June (2015!).Maybe check the minutes for clarification.

I have heard that there are unforseen serious structural issues which have/will cause substantial delays.
Verification required.

But the blocked parking spaces are a fair and valid point, should there not be a permit posted to allow that. I have also seen them blocking the road off with barriers at the entrance to the street for periods of time, to do that do they not also need approval?

Well just when you thought that the issue of the day was the take over of the parking bay beside the Tomfoolery site they start work on Wine Rack

And a stretch of Ryleys Lane now has traffic cones on both sides of the road seemingly reserving spaces for the use of the builders there. Are these the same people (Short Construction) who do this at Tomfoolery?

Watch this space I think the same builder has also started some new work at the back of the Nat West Bank - coming to your village soon a parking exclusion zone in George Street????? I think they have more parking areas than NCP?

All the more reason to walk I say ????
Far better for you , the environment and the parking issue in the village with the added benefit of reducing everyones stress levels!

I almost always walk into the village, and often get forced onto the road by cars parked on the pavements. (Has anyone else tried to walk up Chorley Hall Lane recently?)
However I find that it doesn’t make me any more tolerant or sympathetic to the mass blockading of parking spaces by builders.

Stewart, well said. Today i was complained to about a gentleman in his wheelchair being unable to use the pavement on Redesmere. I referred the complainee to her parish councillor of course.
Fiona, what distance do you suggest for walking, especially for older people (like me?) or people with a disability?

I agree with Duncan, I walk into the village 50-75% of the time at the moment! it’s a dangerous sport! When not as Stewart says being forced into the road I am even occasionally driven ‘at’ by a four wheel driving on the pavement which actually occurs frequently down Ryleys lane (and I add not just two wheels on the kerb but all four on the pavement using it as an unofficial additional highway) . If you don’t believe,e take a wander down Ryleys Lane at approx 0830 or 1530 on a school day. Dare I say it it’s only time until someone has an accident.

Dave. This morning at just after 8.30am I had to risk my life on Ryleys Lane, opposite the entrance to The Ryleys, to get past a white Mercedes, ironically not an “off-roader”, parked with all 4 wheels on the pavement, forcing all pedestrians, never mind a pram or wheelchair, into the very busy road. Thoughtless, inconsiderate and selfish doesn’t begin to describe this.

My original post to this forum on 14.01.15 seems to have got lost amidst other issues we experience in our village. Bringing us back to the Tomfoolery issue .. Over the months we have heard of various delays and have had various reasons for them. However, we have yet to hear from Tomfoolery themselves!!!!! We know they are sponsoring food at the cricket club next week and want to take over some of the pavement for outside dining but when are we actually going to be rid of the eyesore, dirt, parking inconvenience, I could go on. This is becoming one big yawn and when we all wake up I hope it will be worth the wait. Will someone from Tomfoolery please stand up and let us know what on earth is going on??????

This morning I drove the short distance from London Rd., along Reilleys lane , into Redesmere and so to Grasmere…I’ve never done it in the morning rush hour before. Those of you who experience thid daily; how do you keep your sanity?

Well said Joy. I think they could at least offer some sort of explanation. When I spoke to them at the Xmas light switch on, they were aiming to open at the end of January.

Well, some of the cladding and scaffolding have come down and to be fair it’s not yet finished but initially reaction is ‘well that was worth all the wait - not’ . Let’s hope it become a little more special in the last run up to completion!
