Martin Reeves hoodwinked very many of us with his excellent April Fool’s joke, but it got me thinking about just who were the reals stars of Alderley Edge. Could they include:
1. Dr Edward Hopkinson, Manging Director of Mather and Platt, who did more than any other industrial employer in the north-west to improve working conditions and shorten the working week. He also designed and produced the drive motors for the first electric underground trains to run under London, or
2. Dorothy and Margaret Pilkington, part of the glass and tile clan, who were great charitable benefactors and with the assitance of Cheshire County Council, purchased the woodland around Castle Rock and Stormy Point that is enjoyed by so many people today, or
3. Isaac Massey, builder, who constructed many of the Edge Villas in the Conservation Area.
My money would be on the Pilkington Sisters, any other offers ????
