I was interested to see that the opening of Little Waitrose in Alderley Edge made national news today when The Mail ran an article about the death of the high street and how supermarkets are taking over our ‘leafy Cheshire town’.

Let us know your thoughts on The Mail article and the impact of the three supermarkets on our village - http://bit.ly/oP8vbP

The little Waitrose is a great addition to the village. It seems to have made go good impact and is bringing people into the village who might have shopped elsewhere. There prices are on a par and in some cases like wine are cheaper and offer a better selection than the others.

I love the new Little Waitrose. There is a good selection of items and staff are pleasant and friendly. But it does make me wonder why on earth we need 3 mini supermarkets on each others doorsteps in a village this size. I am not in the least a fan of Tesco, but I do find it interesting that there was not the same kind of public outcry to the location of the Little Waitrose as there was to Tesco Express!

Kaz,

Probably because Tesco was developing at the end of a residential street, it threatened to be selling alcohol with an entrance on a resi street (that’s why we have an Oxfam shop, to prevent Tesco being on Clifton St). Whereas, Waitrose converted existing buildings in a few weeks - well it felt quick.

I think there was a loud public outcry for the Little Waitrose but perhaps you did not hear it!
The loss of Fruitcake was a terrible shame as it was a lovely family cafe in a great central location for all the people of the village and the food was excellent too.

What are we going to do this year at the turning on of the christmas lights , no Alan Jackson hog roast,  no Fruit cake just lots of supermarkets. Great!

Hmm maybe it was shorter and quieter!!! I seem to remember the objections to Tesco going on ad infinitum!
