Sainsbury's introduce trolley deposit scheme

I was in Sainsbury’s on Alderley Road, Wilmslow this afternoon when they announced they will be introducing a trolley deposit scheme this Sunday (27th).

The woman I spoke to explained that the scheme is being introduced because they are constantly receiving complaints about trolleys being abandoned all around the town. Sainsbury’s then have to go and collect these trolleys.

She explained that trolleys are regularly left on Altrincham Road and Knutsford Road with Styal Road being the furthest they have had to go to collect one of their trolleys. They even found one in the middle of the A34 recently and this afternoon they collected 25 trolleys from the bus stop by the Coach & Four pub.

So from Sunday you’ll need a pound for a trolley, which you’ll get back of course.

This is in effect now, but I had a nightmare trying to return my trolley as all of the trolley bays around the car park were overflowing. Plus the smaller trolleys were attached to the bigger trolleys, so I then couldn’t get my big trolley to attach to any of the rows (sorry does that even make sense!!), I had to walk back to the store (with 4 year old), in the rain to be able to return the trolley - a pain.  I totally understand why they’ve introduced it but it seems as if they’ve now decided they don’t need any staff to keep the trolley bays under control.

I agree. We went today and there were hardly any trolleys by the door as they were all overflowing out of the trolley bays and blocking the roads. See attached photo.

Again, I can understand why they have done it, but I had to help an elderley lady yesterday as she physically couldn’t push the coin in hard enough to release the key. They need people keeping an eye on things outside.
