Around 1987 the borough council took over the pavements on London road, off the control of many of the shop owners, with the promise to maintain those footpaths. However, walking along both sides it is apparent that little or no maintainance has been forthcoming and many areas are a danger to pedestrians. Why?

Hi Graham,
I am Wes the team leader for Cheshire East streetscape department for Alderley Edge. Is your concern regarding cleanliness or is it the surface conditions? If it is the cleanliness I am here to help with your concerns. If it is with the conditions, I will report the issues to the Highways department and get a full safety check done of the padestrian walk ways. I have recently been made aware of this site and how amazing it actually is. I will try my best to visit the forums on a daily basis and resolve any issues I can help with.

Please have a look at the pavement (or lack of) from the Ryleys School to the new footpath that has been done since the by-pass was finished, better still try pushing a pram to the Chelford Road bridge from the boys school.
Why was this footpath left like this ? (opp. Chorley Hall Road)

Hi Jon,
I presume this is a work in progress on behalf of Highways or a private contractor who did the new bypass. I will forward your concerns to Cheshire Highways department and keep you updated with any feedback i recieve.

It’s work that should have been done by CCC years ago Wesley, not the contractors of the by-pass.

Wes,
The pavements are half owned by retailers and half by the Council. The Council provided a uniform standard in 1987 but the problem now is that there is a growing issue with uneven slabs. (While I am here, the replacements outside the Cheese shop are a poor reflection on the Council : they are a million miles from matching)
On Brown St the kerb should be a drop down kerb, so that mobility scooters can run the length of London Road to access the Doctors’ surgery on George St. Could you remind Highways that this has not yet been addressed.

Hi Frank,
The pavements are half owned by the retailers and half owned by Cheshire Highways. My sections responsibility is the cleanliness of the footways and not the condition of them. I have requested a visit from the Highways to do a full safety inspection of the footways along London road. I hope that this is satisfactory.

Hi Jon,
I visited the site today and again it is a Highways matter. Looking at the footway, it looks like the hedge belongng to the farm land needs to be cut back. I have forwarded this to the Highways department again.

Hi All,
I recieved a call from the Highways department today telling me that the footpaths are inspected regularly from their safety officer. Also they are going to investigate the footpath along Ryles park road. If there is any further quiries, please do not hesitate to mention them and i will try my best to rectify any of them.

Are you talking about Ryles Park Road in Macclesfield or Ryleys Lane in Alderley Edge?

One reason pavements get in a bad state is people parking cars on them, particularly big heavy ones.

Hi Wes, re London road pavements , i can only believe that if these footpaths are on a regular basis “inspected” then maybe pedestrian safety isnt an issue? On the corner of the Nat West Bank, and George St there is one paveing stone with a metal object firmly embedded in it it is about inch long and half inch high , easy to stumble over for elderley person ,but also there are many of the stones the corners and edges of which are proud of the surface, not all have been caused by vehicles driving on them and one does wonder about pedestrian safety.

Hi Graham, unfortunately my department are not responsible for the padestrian highways safety but only the cleansing of them. It may be an idea to get onto your local councillor about the issue as he will have more pull with Highways than i do im afraid. I did pass the issue onto them but that is as far as i can take it.

Thanks Wes, as my local councillors are local maybe no need to tell them about dangerous parts of London Road footpaths?
Maybe they can see for themselves?
