What a saga - virtual gridlock!

I set off from home (Knutsford Road, Alderley Edge) at 4.50pm to go to the village for an appointment at 5.30pm today - thinking I’d left myself plenty of time despite the road chaos.

Knowing Brook Lane was closed and the A34 would be a car park, I went along Foden Lane to join Chelford Road and yes, I didn’t realise Chelford Road was also closed! So I followed the diversion, drove to Chelford, back along towards Monk’s Heath, down Bollington Lane and then queued along the A34 into the village getting there at 5.45pm.

By which time I’d missed my appointment and I then had to sit in traffic all the way along the A34 to the King’s Arms and finally got back home at 6.10pm. An hour and 20 minutes, about a tenner in petrol and a very hot and bothered me…

This bypass had better be worth it! The only relief was that traffic heading out of the village towards Monk’s Heath was queued solidly from Artist’s Lane all the way to the Monk’s Heath traffic lights and at least I wasn’t heading that way (apologies if you were in that queue dear reader…)

I know it’s my own fault for not keeping up with the road closures (I have since found Lisa’s article saying that Chelford Road was going to be closed) but surely there must have been a way of not having Brook Lane and Chelford Road both closed at the same time? Or is that just naive of me?

Of course the moral of the story is that I should have walked and saved myself a load of hassle! Sorry for the rant…

Kirsteen - I am not sure that walking would have helped much. I tried to walk along Chelford Road last night (Tuesday 29th June) and discovered that the pedestrian access route had been closed off without any warning. Try getting around that one on foot!! And, as an aside, can they do that without notice?
