Schools, parents and children were pleased to see that the lights at the pedestrian crossing on Wilmslow Road are back in operation today.

The crossing outside Alderley Edge School for Girls, which is used by hundreds of children from both the girl's school and Alderley Edge Community Primary, was out of action for 16 days as a result of a cable fault.

Engineers from Electricity North West started work on repairing the fault on Friday, 15th March, (day twelve) and installed a set of temporary lights - which resulted in long tailbacks in the village and on the A34 bypass.

For the two weeks that the crossing was out of operation two caretakers from Alderley Edge Girls for School helped children cross the road every morning and after school.

Unfortunately on Monday, 18th March, one of the caretakers was hit by a car which jumped the red light - though he was not hurt.

The temporary traffic lights were removed last night and the lights at the pedestrian crossing were switched back on at approximately 10am this morning.

A spokesperson from Cheshire East Council said today "Cheshire East Council is committed to ensuring that everyone is as safe as possible when crossing roads. From first notification we contacted Electricity North West, with whom we have been working to ensure that the fault is fixed as soon as possible.

"The problem has now been rectified, the pedestrian lights are now fully functioning and the footpath has been restored (Wednesday). We hope that any inconvenience has been kept to a minimum."
