Investigation continues into cause of Panacea fire

An investigation into the cause of a major fire which engulfed Panacea last week is still ongoing.

Fire Investigation Officers are working with the police and still looking into the cause of the blaze which is being treated as suspicious.

The incident occurred just before 10.30pm on Tuesday 12th March and has been captured on CCTV.

The police confirmed today that there have been no arrests in connection with the fire which has left the bar and restaurant devastated.

Whilst the front facade remains intact, the roof has collapsed in on itself and the rest of the building has been extensively damaged.

Darrell Butterworth, Head of Security at Panacea, told me "Officers are assessing but they appear to have smashed the side window and lent in through the window.

"Certainly that part of the building is going to have to come out but the building is still being assessed. We are obliged to make the building safe but the experts will decide whether it is structurally sound."

Darrell added "It is heartbreaking. We have got 40 staff, some of whom are part time and some it is helping through university. For a lot of people it was a full time job, they are all going to be out of work now."

Around 50 firefighters and ten fire engines attended the incident on Tuesday evening, and worked through the night to bring the huge blaze under control.

Shortly before the fire broke out two people were seen to arrive in a dark coloured vehicle. They got out and were seen walking towards the building, then seen again leaving in the car.

DI Robert Hassall said: "We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and saw a dark coloured BMW or Audi shortly before 10.30pm."

Anyone with information concerning the incident should contact DI Robert Hassall on 101 quoting incident number 925 of 12 March 2013.

Alternatively information can be given anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
