Fire engulfs Panacea

Police are currently investigating a serious fire at Panacea which over 40 firefighters have been tackling.

The fire service and Cheshire Police received calls just before 10.30pm on Tuesday 12th March.

On arrival crews from Wilmslow and Macclesfield found a major blaze in the large, two storey detached property measuring approximately 15 by 45 metres.

The fire broke through the roof of the property and the attendance was increased initially to five fire engines and then to ten fire engines and a hydraulic platform.

Fire engines at the scene include two from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, as well as ones from Bollington, Poynton, Holmes Chapel, two from Northwich and two from Macclesfield, and the incident command unit.

The fire appears to be mainly at the rear of the building, as shown in the photo above which was taken from Davey Lane.

Firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus for comfort, are working with six main jets to get the fire under control and prevent it from spreading.

The bar and restaurant was closed when the fire broke out. There have been no reports of any injuries or evacuations of other premises at this time but warnings about smoke from the site have been passed to train companies as a precaution because of the proximity to the railway line.

Police are also in attendance and have set up a cordon around the site.

An investigation in to the cause of the fire is underway and Cheshire Police are appealing to anyone who may have any information concerning the incident to contact them using the 101 number and quoting incident number 925 of 12 March.

The restaurant at Panacea has been closed since the beginning of the year and was due to reopen as a Piccolino Italian restaurant this spring, whilst the bar and club recently underwent a makeover, reopening on January 25th 2013.

Panacea opened it doors in Alderley Edge in September 2008 after a reported £3.2 million spend but disaster struck after only five days when fire engulfed the building in the early hours of September 17th 2008.

Initially the owners said they thought the fire had started accidentally, but within the week police were treating the incident as suspicious and revealed that the cause of the blaze was believed to be arson. Nobody has been prosecuted for that attack though and the restaurant and club reopened in October 2009.

The number of fire engines at the scene is expected to be scaled back within the hour.

Road closures have been put in place as follows; Wilmslow Road at the junction of Brook Lane, Ryleys Lane and Davey Lane at the junction of Greystone Drive - although these are expected to be significantly reduced by early morning.
