Alderley Edge Girls celebrate A Level success

Alderley Edge School for Girls is celebrating yet another year of impressive A Level results with 45% of all grades at an A or above, 28% of girls achieving 3 grade As or more, and 71% achieving a grade B or above. Both staff and girls are delighted with an exceptional 15% of girls also achieving the new A* grade.

Headmistress Susan Goff enthused, "Yet again, we have shown that our highly academic and supportive learning environment is a successful one. It has been widely reported that this year has been harder than ever to secure a University place, however we are delighted to say that with a 100% pass rate, nearly all our girls had already secured the places they chose by the time the results were issued."

Mrs Goff was keen to praise her excellent team of staff who helped the girls, providing tremendous support through the whole A level and UCAS process – culminating in being in school before 7am on results day to ensure any questions the girls had could be answered.

Catherine Millar, Head of Sixth Form added, "Fierce competition for places means that Universities are continually trying to distinguish the best candidates, this means that academic achievement and extra curricular activities all have a part to play. Although our results speak for themselves, education is not just about passing exams, it's about finding the right work-life balance and we are really pleased that our girls have shown such commitment and dedication to their studies."

High achievers and individual successes to be noted at Alderley Edge School for Girls are:

Creamy Lam achieved 6 A levels with an A* in Maths, 3 A grades in Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry and B grades in French and Global Perspectives. Creamy also achieved Grade 8 in both Violin and Flute during her final examination term and will now be taking a gap year in industry before pursuing a degree in Engineering.

Lisa Nowak, who will be going on to read Philosophy and Theology in Leeds, achieved 5 A' Levels including 3 A* grades in Religious Studies, English Literature and Global Perspectives, plus A grades in both History and Biology.

Special credit should also go to Helena Cartwright, Katy Dean and Chloe Tucker who all achieved 3 or more A grades. Current Head Girl Caroline Rankin, and Deputy Head Girls Phoebe Kowalska and Vicky Spedding also aced this summer's exams by all achieving one or more A* grades whilst being fully committed to their demanding roles in school.

In addition to the A Level qualifications, several girls took on a further challenge with the new Cambridge Pre-U qualification as an alternative to A Level. The school is delighted to report that all girls achieved highly in this linear course, with special congratulations going to Katy Morum who achieved the highest possible grade ( D1), which is even higher than the A* A Level grade.

Katy also achieved 3 further A grades in French, History and Global Perspectives. Four girls also qualified for the overarching Cambridge International Pre-U Diploma – specialising in a minimum of three subjects showing the ability to research and communicate in depth, and in addition, demonstrating skills in critical thinking, reflection and empathy with regard to key contemporary issues and debates.

A spokesperson from Cheshire East Council has just announced that "Sixth formers in Cheshire East have yet again recorded an outstanding set of A-level results."

With all schools’ results but one now confirmed, projections are that Cheshire East’s 1,600 students have recorded a 97.6 per cent pass rate - identical to the national figure, which is one per cent higher than the previous year.

Provisional figures show that sixth formers achieved an average points score of 817, compared with 751 recorded on results day last year.

More than a quarter of students achieved grades of A*, introduced this year, and A.

Councillor Hilda Gaddum, Cabinet member with responsibility for children and families, said: “Each year it becomes harder to improve on previous levels of achievement, yet I am delighted to report that Cheshire East students appear to have done just that.

“This exceptional performance is a just reward for the hard work, dedication and enthusiasm shown by students and staff. My congratulations go to them all."
