Thomas Tonge of Styal

Wednesday, 9th Dec, 2020 7:30pm

Wilmslow Historical Society holds its third free Zoom Lecture. Jon Armstrong, the Society's Archivist, will be giving an illustrated lecture on Thomas Tonge of Styal.

He writes: "we frequently read of things the Gregs of Styal did to improve the lives of their workers and how seriously they viewed their responsibilities for the welfare of the villagers. Thomas Tonge, born to a working-class family in 1848, is a fascinating example of how people were able to seize the opportunities they were afforded and forge successful lives and careers that took them thousands of miles away from Styal. In later life, his correspondence with the Greg family gives us detailed insights into the village in the 1850s and 1860s, together with colourful and often humorous accounts of the people who lived there."

Alan Cooper says "this will be the third free Zoom talk the Historical Society has held and everyone is welcome to zoom in to see it. We were delighted to receive an excellent response to our first two talks on "Homes for Heroes", the Highfield Estate, and "The '45 Rebellion", Bonnie Prince Charlie's abortive invasion of England via Wilmslow and are planning further talks in the future.

To join in the occasion please email: [email protected].

The presentation will be at 7.30 pm.

No requests for a link can be accepted later than Monday, 7th December 2020.

Wilmslow Historical Society was founded in 1969 and currently has a membership of 108. In normal times we meet in the United Reformed Church on the second Wednesday of the month from September to May to hear lectures on a broad range of historic subjects including local, national and international topics.
