Parish Council still deciding whether to cough up for CCTV

Alderley Edge Parish Council (AEPC) is still considering whether to contribute towards the cost of maintaining the CCTV cameras in the village.

Cheshire East Council (CEC) has requested that they pay £5500 to cover the three surveillance cameras in the village centre for a year - so they are monitored, maintained and replaced where necessary during the period.

To help save money, CEC has asked town and parish councils across the borough to contribute towards the cost of running CCTV cameras, otherwise they will no longer be monitored or replaced.

Wilmslow Town Council agreed at their April meeting to pay £16,650 to cover the nine surveillance cameras in Wilmslow town centre from 1st April 2014 to 31st March 2015. However AEPC are still undecided as they want more information about the service they will receive before making a decision.

Cllr Mary Maczkowiak has been to the CCTV monitoring centre at Macclesfield with PCSO Jim Newns so councillors agreed at this week's parish council meeting to arrange visits to the centre so they can take a look for themselves at how it works and what we are going to get for the money.

Cllr Frank Keegan said "We should ask the person who wrote the letter (from CEC) to take us there and explain what we are going to get. We'll see what the service they are going to offer us is."

Cllr Sue Joseph added "Well it's a lot of money but in the long term if it saves more than that in criminal damage or criminal activity then it's worth it."
