Alderley Edge Parish Council's application for a War Memorial Grant is being recommended for refusal.

Communities and voluntary organisations were invited to apply for a slice of £100,000 being provided by Cheshire East to fund the repair and refurbishment of First World War memorials across the Borough.

Council Leader Michael Jones announced the creation of the new £100,000 fund in December as this year sees the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War.

The funding is for the financial year 2014/15 only, with individual grants up to £2,500 are available. However, applications for sums over £2,500 but up to a maximum of £10,000 will be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Alderley Edge Parish Council applied for £1000 funding to re-pave the base which is an integral part of the memorial, owned by Cheshire East Council. The total cost of the project is £6995.

Cabinet Member for Strategic Communities Cllr David Brown will consider the 15 applications they have recieved at a meeting on Monday, 28th April. The report prepared for this meeting recommends that Alderley Edge Parish Council's application for £1000 is declined because the cleaning methods for the rest of the memorial in the original quotation have been highlighted as unsuitable by the Heritage team.

It is recommended that the application is declined and referred to Cheshire East Assets team who are awaiting the results of their quinquennial inspections to agree a programme of work for Cheshire East owned memorials.

Applications from Bollington War Memorial Fund, Middlewich Town Council and Nantwich Town Council also look like being refused, whilst 11 grants totalling £24,342 are recommended for approval.

The funding was made available for: cleaning (under certain circumstances); improving legibility of inscriptions; like-for-like repairs; professional condition surveys or structural reports by conservation professionals to inform future repair work; replacement of lost elements integral to the design of the memorial and addition of names, where they can be sympathetically placed on existing memorials.

If the 11 grants recommended for approval total £24,342 and others are recommended for refusal, what will happen to the rest of the £100,000 fund? Are there more areas whose war memorials will receive funding?
