Minister gets on his bike for Spire Appeal

Rev Ben Clowes - Cycling for the Spire

A local minister is preparing to cycle the first stage of the Tour de France, which this year begins in Leeds on 5th July, in his local gym.

Reverend Ben Clowes will be cycling 118 miles, which he aims to complete before the Tour officially leaves Leeds, to raise money for the Alderley Edge Methodist Church Spire Appeal.

Between 2011 and 2012 the Methodist Church, who celebrated their 150th anniversary in 2013, had to spend nearly £1/2m to repair the Spire and East Gable. They received grants from English Heritage, the National Churches Trust and the Historic Churches of Cheshire Trust towards the restoration work, however the Church still needs to raise £5000 so the work can be completed.

In January 2014 Rev Ben Clowes challenged every member of the congregation, who felt able, to try and raise £50 during the year towards the final bills, as part of 'Challenge 50'.

He explained "I am not exempt from this challenge, so as part of this I am following the local vicar's lead - last year Rev Jane Parry swam the channel in her local gym. Between April and June in 2014, I will be cycling the first stage of the Tour de France, however, like Rev Parry, I will be cycling in my local gym."

All monies raised from this challenge will go towards the Spire Fund - if anyone would like to sponsor Revd Clowes they are asked to contact the Church Office on 01625 586713 or email [email protected].
