Guides lend a helping hand to treat the troops

Troops Guides 2014

Girls from the 1st Alderley Edge Girl Guide Unit, along with their leader Judy Povey and helpers, gave up their evening to lend a hand at Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe on Monday, 27th January.

They helped to pack and decorate shoe boxes full of sweets which are bound for the servicemen and women in Afghanistan, in time for Valentine's Day.

Judy Povey said, "I think the feeling of helping the troops does quite set them alight, and they want to be involved. The girls contributed to the boxes by carefully choosing lots of tasty treats to send themselves. They even made some exquisite, very thoughtful Valentines cards with special goodwill messages to go in the boxes."

Judy O'Brien from Mr Simms said, "It's wonderful to include the Guides in this project. Their invaluable help is really appreciated as it takes a good deal of time to pack and weigh the boxes. Also, a big thank you goes out to all our enthusiastic customers, local businesses and suppliers for all the shoeboxes and for so generously adding to our contributions for the well deserving troops. Last year we had letters and emails back from the servicemen telling us what a morale booster it was to receive the boxes and tuck into the sweets."

Operation Shoebox, who are a team of volunteers, are collecting the boxes on Saturday 4th February to ensure that they arrive in time for Valentine's Day.
