Irate resident leaves driver a note

A disgruntled resident demonstrated their frustration at having cars parked near their home by leaving a note for the driver.

The driver, who wishes to remain anonymous, parked on Windermere Drive for about two hours yesterday afternoon whilst visiting the village with her boyfriend for lunch.

She returned about 3pm to discover the above note had been placed on the windscreen.

The lady, who was visiting from Cheadle Hulme, explained "I have actually injured my back and so parking nearer to The Grill (where we ate) would have been ideal, so you can imagine parking as far away as Windermere Drive was less than convenient.

"We don't come into Alderley very often, but have eaten at several restaurants in the village, including The Botanist, The Bubble Room, The Grill On The Edge, Gusto etc. We usually try to park either in the Little Waitrose car park or the other small car park next to the railway line (South Street), but both were full.

"We were legally parked; there were no yellow lines (single or double), we were not parked in front of a driveway or near a corner, or near the end of the road. I have absolutely no doubt of this.

"I'm almost certain the person who placed the note was just being precious about the road but we were perfectly within our rights to park there. Also, if there had been parking options closer to the restaurant, trust me, we would not have parked as far away as Windermere Drive."

She added "I think that if more public parking was made available, these problems would not occur and therefore residents would not get angry. I'm sure you get this all the time but it is a huge problem! Especially for a village that is quite a hub of nightlife."

Updated: 5pm Monday 20th January.

I've been handed a second note which was placed on the windscreen of a car parked in the same area of Windermere Drive this afternoon. The note can be seen by scrolling to the second photo above.

The driver is quite within her rights to park there, provided, as she says, she parked there and didn't block anyone in and didn't park on any corner and there were no double or single line restrictions, etc, etc.

If someone parks on a private road or private drive, then that is entirely different, but she didn't.
She parked on a public road legally in every respect, according to what we've been told.

This case is similar to incidents which used to happen in Wilmslow when workers parked on Holly Road and its side roads. I once had an A4 size notice glued with Pritt stick to my drivers door window! Again we all parked legally and caused no obstructions. Those roads now have short stay parking bays on them so I now pay to park but others still find spaces on residential roads which means arriving very early or involves a longer walk. Obviously if free street parking is available people will use it. The problem in Alderley Edge is that there are just not enough car parks to accommodate the cars which are currently parked on Mottram Road, Moss Road etc.. so until we have a new car park residents bays would be impractical.

It's a shame people seem to think they own the road in front of their house, when we lived in Derbyshire you were lucky if you could park your own car in front of your house (no drives), but no one bothered too much.

What a pathetic note to stick on someone's car which was legally parked and what a 'welcome to Alderley Edge' advertisement.

Perhaps the author will own up and apologise for the implied puncture threat. If someone left a note on my car like that, I'd try as hard as I could to find them.

'Puncture Alley' indeed !!!!!!!!

I wholeheartedly agree with you Richard. People should not be allowed to get away with threatening gestures like this and I would urge the lady in question to involve the police. That is the first thing I would have done given the same situation.

I think this might encourage people to park here out of sheer devilment!

Ironic that whoever did this chose a legally parked vehicle when they had a choice of hundreds that are parked illegally in and around Alderley Edge and Wilmslow. They would need a large notebook to target those though ;)
