New charity shop prepares for take off as travel agent relocates

A travel agent has relocated from a retail unit in the village centre to an office, making way for another charity shop to open on the highstreet.

Worldwide Escapes, which has been in Alderley Edge since 2003, has decided to stay in the village but move to an office above the Tesco Express store.

Sarah Thompson explained "We are staying in the village with an office which is more 'open plan', enabling us to accommodate more staff and create a 'private client travel lounge' which we feel would provide a more relaxed setting when clients want to discuss their holiday plans."

North West Air Ambulance, which opened their first Cheshire store in Hale last year, will be taking on the premises at 55 London Road to help raise vital funds for the life-saving service.

Their two helicopters fly 365 days a year, with the doctors and paramedics on board providing rapid treatment, hospital transfers, and ultimately, giving the gift of time to patients across the entire North West region each year. On average the North West Air Ambulance is called out five times a day, rising up to ten in the summer. It costs in excess of £4.2 million per year to maintain both aircraft, but with almost no central government or lottery funding, they rely on the generosity of our supporters.

The Charity's retail arm has been very successful in generating income, contributing to the funds needed to keep the region's air ambulances flying and saving lives.

Reliant on volunteers and public donations, the Charity is looking for generous locals to donate their time or second-hand goods to help the store get off to a flying start.

For more information on how you could get involved in supporting the new store, you can call North West Air Ambulance on 0800 587 4570.

They must be renting it cheaply Mike. When last year the location went up for rent (the travel agent was still in it), it was advertised at £40,000p/a. I think a charity shop gets incredible breaks and, of course, very few people are crazy/prepared enough, financially speaking, to start a venture in Alderley at that cost (and that's rent only).

why no more charity shops? what harm are they doing? they are always busy and provide an array of diffrent things to buy! they dont look messy and not everyone wants to spend 90 pounds on a top every time they go shopping !

Totally agree with Lucy! Believe it or not but not everybody that lives in Alderley can afford the lifestyle of which it is known for. Yes, we have a council estate! Yes, we have single mothers and Yes, we have people/families on benefits. I'm not ashamed to say that most of my wardrobe has been bought from a charity shop! Never in a million years would I be able to afford to shop in some of these shops that we have. So bring on the charity shops! Sorry to say but it's the little people that love these shops but it's the little people that are also helping others!

A charity shop is at least better than an empty shop, but speaks a lot about the vitality of the local economy at the moment. No shops can survive in the village with three supermarkets - who ever allowed Tesco and Waitrose to the village will be responsible for the decline of this village.
