Denise Welch switches on Alderley's Christmas lights

The countdown to Christmas has officially begun in Alderley Edge.

There was a fantastic atmosphere in the village this evening, with hundreds of local residents gathered on London Road for the Alderley Edge Christmas lights switch on which was performed by local celebrity Denise Welch.

The former Loose Women presenter and Coronation Street actress was accompanied on stage by the two winners of the school's poster competition, Julian Aldams from Alderley Edge Primary School and Florence Sabry from Alderley Edge School for Girls.

Father Christmas also made an appearance. Having arrived on his sleigh, Santa ascended to the top floor of the double decker bus where children visiting his grotto were delighted to tell Santa what they were wishing for this Christmas and receive a bag of treats.

Thankfully, after last year's torrential rain, the evening was dry and relatively mild so the crowds could be entertained after the light switch on with an open mic session, organised by the Yard.

The event was put on by Alderley Edge traders who generously provided complimentary refreshments, including mince pies, hot chocolate, prosecco, hog roast, mulled wine, spiced cider, balloons and chocolate lollipops, as a thank you to their customers for the support they provide the village businesses throughout the year.
