Former Loose Woman to light up Alderley

Alderley Edge traders are delighted to have secured the help of a local celebrity to switch on the Christmas lights this week.

Having agreed that they wanted a celebrity to kick off the festive celebrations in Alderley Edge, traders decided to start by approaching those that use the services of the village throughout the year.

Sadie Pickering from the Yard got the chance to ask a regular user of her business, former Loose Woman, Coronation Street star and Alderley Edge resident Denise Welch, who was happy to say yes straight away.

Mitch Gilbert, owner of Rainbow Balloons and Alderley Edge Traders Action Group member said "We are now in our 11th year of organising the Christmas Lights Switch on and as each year has gotten bigger this year really has become the biggest yet and so we felt we should take it up a gear and ask one of our local "celebrity" residents to be a part of it. This event is an opportunity for the traders to say thank you to our customers and visitors for the support they provide the village businesses throughout the year and of course to show off the village at its best at this time of the year."

The evening's activities begin along London Road at 6pm on Thursday, 21st November. Highlights will include the free hog roast, free mulled wine, an appearance from the man himself, Father Christmas and of course the lights switch on itself. This will be followed by an open mic session on the main stage.

London Road will be closed to traffic between 4pm and 10pm, from its junction with Heyes Lane to its junction with Chapel Road. However, the fun doesn't stop once the road reopens at 10pm as many of the bars and restaurants are putting on special offers to keep the party going.
