Redundant signs 'a complete nonsense'

Alderley Edge Parish Council will address the problem of redundant diversion signs with Cheshire East Council as an increasing number are left up months after the roadworks have been completed - confusing motorists and littering the road sides.

Cllr Nigel Schofield said "There seem to be a lot of examples in or around the village where diversion signs go up saying roads are closed and half of them are left afterwards so you're not quite sure which road is closed going where. It's a complete nonsense."

Cllr Melanie Connor said "There's lot of bollards still on Chorley Hall Lane, there's diversions at Chelford roundabout all the way to Macclesfield and Holmes Chapel saying diversion but nobody's being diverted anywhere and they've been there six months.

"Surely somebody checks signs to find out where they are because somebody who's new to the area thinks they're being diverted."

Cllr Mike Williamson added "The actual diversion signs are put up by contractors and they forget they've put them out. Cheshire East inspectors, who go round on a day to day basis inspecting the roads, who should report them to the contractors to get them shifted or put them in their cars and take them away."

Alternatively Melanie Connor suggested collecting them and selling them on Ebay.

Duncan Herald also raised the issue of the laminated signs put up on lamp posts to alert passers-by to road closures.

The signs, presumably put up by Cheshire East Council for this year's May Fair are still hung on lamp posts around the village - whereas all the signs put up by the organising committee were removed the following morning.

I spoke to a senior member of the Highways team about 7 months ago about the yellow diversion signs. He feigned interest initially but when I tackled him last week he doggedly insisted that they had been removed, he then proceeded to tell me that he had not actually bothered to visit this area for a while?!.This is the same highways "expert" who commissioned the re-signalling works which have caused so much upheaval in Wilmslow. lately . I learned that he did this after receiving one complaint about the old lights. I had suggested back in August that 1/2 term starts this weekend and postponing the works until then would benefit the town more. Instead he chose to disregard this advice and scheduled the disruptive works to end just as half term gets underway. I noted that he and his team were also responsible for the horrendous disruption and interminable queues of traffic spread over 3 days in August as they closed off entire stretches of the A34 for resurfacing, he was on annual leave when that particular mess flared up. I have him listed under J for "jobsworth" in my contacts section....

Once again, Cheshire East Council don't seem to know what they're doing ?
What a total waste of time and effort many of these councillors are !
The report also goes to show how inefficient some of these Cheshire East Inspectors are if they don't, or can't, see the signs are still there months after their use.
